  • Column: Night special for Dakota...

    Solveig Nelson may just be a Dakota Ridge High School senior basketball player, but she knows all too well the affects breast cancer has taken on her family.
    Three generations of the Nelson clan have endured this battle — her great grandmother and grandmother  both passed away from breast cancer and an aunt just finished chemotherapy in December. So Nelson has seen all too much what breast cancer can do.

  • Hobbs peaking heading into state

    LAKEWOOD — Averly Hobbs is ready. At least that’s the hope after the Chatfield diver won the 5A Jeffco League championship on Feb. 2 at the Carmody Rec Center.
    Hobbs, who placed fourth at the 5A state meet in 2012, won the 2013 conference championship with a score of 410.05 points. Lakewood’s Allison Murphy was second with 380.55 points, while Chatfield teammate Nicole Hagen came in third with 317.95.

    “Think Pink Night” scheduled for Feb. 8 at Dakota Ridge
    Dakota Ridge High is hosting “Think Pink Night” as part of  the Rebels’ doubleheader girls and boys basketball game against Columbine on Feb. 8. Dakota Ridge will honor family members and friends who are breast cancer survivors during halftime of the boys game.
    Each  survivor gets into the game free.

  • Lady Chargers’ offense clicks in...

    The first half of Chatfield’s 56-43 girls basketball victory at rival Columbine on Jan. 23 was a case of both teams having their share of struggles. The Lady Chargers failed time and again to make crisp passes in to the paint, while Columbine was forcing shots.
    But in the second half it was only the Lady Rebels who struggled.
    Kelsi Lawrence led a balanced Chatfield attack with a game-high 10 points as the Lady Chargers extended their winning streak over Columbine to five games. Overall, Chatfield had lost four of its previous five.

  • Marchese, Rebels stonewall Eagles

    The only person who stood between Dakota Ridge’s Joey Dolce and a sure breakaway goal was Columbine senior goaltender Charlie Marchese. That, unfortunately for Dolce, was the problem. Nothing was going to get past Marchese as he stood between the pipes Jan. 25 at the Edge Ice Arena.
    The stalwart goaltender was a brick wall as Columbine produced its first shutout in more than three years with a 2-0 victory over the Eagles. It was the first shutout for the Rebels since a 5-0 win over Mullen on Jan. 19, 2010, a stretch of 61 games.

  • Chargers take control of 5A...

    Identifying a go-to player for the Chatfield Chargers is virtually impossible. There isn’t one. Chatfield’s 2012-13 boys basketball team is a collective unit and on any given night anybody could step up and take a leadership role, especially when it comes to scoring.

  • Height, game fall in Rebels’...

    Columbine was 9-2; Arvada West 9-3. On paper, they were evenly-matched teams, but when the the Wildcats went to the Rebels’ house the scales tipped heavily in Columbine’s favor as evidence by a 72-50 victory on Jan. 17.
    Early in the game Columbine established its dominance, building a 10-0 lead. That was the wake-up call the Wildcats needed to start hitting their shots and before the period ended Arvada West was on the board. The score was as close as it would get the whole night at 19-11.

    BOYS BASKETBALL
    Chatfield extends win streak to nine games, thumps Gators
    WESTMINSTER     — Brenden Mann scored a team-high 17 points, including five 3-pointers, as Chatfield won its ninth straight game with a 76-54 defeat of host Standley Lake on Jan. 11.
    Alec Wray added 16 points and Michael Hampson scored 13 as the Chargers (11-1) improved to 5-0 in the 5A Jeffco League.
    Marcus Asmus led Standley Lake (2-9, 1-4) with a game-high 23 points.
