  • Norris stands up at league

EVERGREEN — Aaron Norris had built a three-point lead and before he knew it the Chatfield senior lost it. An illegal hold and a reversal by Bear Creek’s Hammer Morton had evened the score in the finals of their 215-pound bout at the 5A Jeffco League wrestling championships on Feb. 5 at Evergreen High School.

With Morton in control and time winding down, Norris knew what had to be done.

“I just had to stand up. I knew what I had to do. My coaches showed me,” Norris said. “I did what I had to do.”

  • Kuhr wins twice at Jeffco meet

ARVADA — Meyers Pool was packed to capacity on Feb. 5 as female swimmers from both the 4A and 5A divisions gave it their all to set state qualifying times, league records and increase their team’s points before next week’s state finals.

In the 5A division Ralston Valley took first place in team points with a score of 436. Columbine took third place with 338 points, Chatfield fourth with 298.5 and Dakota Ridge sixth with 154.

  • Roundup: Davis, Knoll carry...

Kyle Davis and Trevor Knoll scored two goals each and Nate Grush, Jeff Dawkins and Kurtis Youse also netted scores as Chatfield defeated Dakota Ridge, 7-1, on Feb. 4 at the Edge Ice Arena.

The Chargers (15-2) have won 10 straight. Dakota Ridge (4-13-1) got a first-period tally from Ross Brauer.

Rebels’ losing streak reaches five in 3-1 defeat at Aspen
ASPEN — Ben Ripperton scored Columbine’s only goal in a 3-1 loss to Aspen on Feb. 5 at the Lewis Ice Arena.

  • Lady Falcons tune up for playoffs

The last remaining undefeated in Class 2A is … the Front Range Christian girls basketball team.

The Lady Falcons’ latest win, however, was not necessarily their most dramatic, beating an undermanned Nederland squad, 56-12, on Jan. 29 at Front Range Christian School.

  • Chatfield’s depth the difference...

It’s not like Hannah Kuhr wasn’t a good swimmer to start with. She was. But now the Columbine junior has added an extra element to her game — a faster start — that makes her that much better.

It certainly didn’t hurt on Jan. 28 at the Ridge Recreation Center when she swam to dominating victories in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly against arch-rival Chatfield

  • Gators even score in rematch

WESTMINSTER — When Standley Lake met Dakota Ridge on Dec. 17 at Dakota Ridge High School, the Lady Eagles dominated from the opening tip-off. The rematch on Jan. 28 at Standley lake High School was virtually the polar opposite.

The Lady Gators(12-4 overall, 8-2 5A Jeffco) jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and were never challenged in a 54-37 victory.

  • Roundup: Koop’s 17 points leads...

Alex Koop led three Columbine players in double figures with 17 points as the Rebels rolled to a 76-50 win over Lakewood on Jan. 27 at Columbine High School.

Nick Carpinello added 12 points and Jonathan Snow scored 10 for Columbine.

The Rebels built a 23-9 lead after one quarter and 35-18 at halftime.

Five score in double figures for Dakota Ridge in 68-56 victory
Derek Vander Velde scored 21 points and had eight rebounds as Dakota Ridge toppled Standley Lake, 68-56, on Jan. 27 at Dakota Ridge High School.
