  • Rebels coast to easy win

    LAKEWOOD — If it had been a baseball game they would have invoked the 10-run rule.

    What began as a competitive Class 5A Jefferson County League swimming meet at Carmody Pool between Bear Creek, Columbine and Dakota Ridge, quickly turned into a showcase for the Columbine swimmers who won all 11 races, as well as the diving competition.

    Columbine finished with 166 points, Bear Creek with 94 points and Dakota Ridge with 57 points, but the scary thing is, it could have been worse.

  • Don’t sleep on Chargers

    In the span of a month, the Chatfield girls basketball team has gone from pretender to contender in Class 5A Jefferson County.

    When you sit back and study the roster, the transformation really shouldn’t be surprising.

    What should leave you scratching your head is how did this team, which has veteran players at nearly every position, get off to such a slow start?

  • Chargers swat away pesky Eagles

    In its basketball program, Chatfield senior basketball players are referred to as the “Terrific T’s.

    But, Tyler Rogers, Taylor Rogers, and Tyler Haidaris better make room for one more T – junior Trevor Wages.

    The 6-foot-7 center held his own in the Jan. 23 game against Dakota Ridge. Wages helped guide the Chargers to a 74-61 victory over the Eagles with a big second half contribution. He scored eight points, but more importantly he provided a strong post presence against a Dakota Ridge defense that was not going to back down.

  • Young guns help Chatfield pin...

    It didn’t matter that Erik Gaytan and Clay Davenport were new to the Chatfield varsity rivalry with Columbine, neither needed an extra reason to win.

    Gaytan, a freshman, and Davenport, a sophomore who moved in from South Carolina, notched pins in the last two matches Jan. 22 to ensure Chatfield’s 45-33 victory over the host Rebels.

    “You know you have to win, it’s Columbine. … I know everybody there,” Gaytan said. “You got to beat them.”

  • Chatfield girls remain perfect...

    When the 2008-09 girls basketball season, Chatfield looked like a team uncomfortable in its own skin.

    Dropping six of its first seven games, Chatfield had a bumpy start transitioning to new coach Mike Deutsch’s up-tempo scheme.

    After a bit of work, the road is much smoother now for the Chargers.

    And, while the Dakota Ridge team the Chargers faced Jan. 23 isn’t as powerful as ones of the recent past, the team’s 48-43 win over the rival Eagles was significant for a number of reasons.

    LAKEWOOD — Chatfield boys basketball coach Steve Schimpeler found his missing team Jan. 21. A positive result, however, continued to hide.

    Days after going AWOL and being upset by the defensive Arvada West Wildcats, the Chargers showed up in time to face Class 5A Jefferson County League leader Green Mountain.

    The Chargers had plenty of grit and moxie for four quarters, only for the Rams to knock them out in overtime for a 67-63 defeat.

    “We have character. We just don’t have enough firepower,” Schimpeler said.

  • Chargers wear down Rebels

    The final score will read: Chatfield 80, Columbine 63, but in actuality, the boys basketball game between the two rival schools was much closer.

    The underdog Rebels played inspired basketball Jan. 14 at Chatfield Senior High School, and the first quarter, in particular, was a thing of beauty – something their coach, Jeff Wennberg, hopes becomes the norm as the team enters the meat of the Class 5A Jefferson County League schedule.

  • Armstrong, O'Brien pace...

    When the pressure is on that’s when Chrissy Armstrong is at her best.

    She proved it Jan. 14, knocking down 8-of-10 free throws in the final minute to help guide Chatfield to a 70-61 victory over Columbine in a Class 5A Jefferson County League game at Chatfield Senior High School.
