Ex-Littleton product Jones drafted by Predators

Seth Jones, a former player for the Littleton Hawks and Colorado Thunderbirds, was drafted with the No. 4 pick in the NHL draft June 30 by the Nashville Predators.
The 6-foot-3, 205-pound defenseman was projected as one of the top players in this year’s draft, but the hometown Colorado Avalanche elected to go with center Nathan Mackinnon with the No. 1 overall pick. Florida and Tampa Bay followed suit by going offensive before the draft’s top defender came off the board.

  • Dietz Challenge pushes players...

Dan Dietz looked at the field on June 28 at Littleton Public Schools Stadium and knew the effort that was being put forth, by both the Chatfield Senior High and Heritage High football players, was worthy of honoring the sacrifice his son Danny Dietz made. The younger Dietz, a U.S. Navy SEAL, made the ultimate sacrifice on June 28, 2005.

Columbine’s Degutis escapes serious injury at 7-on-7 tourney
    DENVER
    — Columbine senior Tanner Degutis suffered neck and back injuries but avoided serious injury after a frightening fall on the second play from scrimmage in the Rebels’ 14-10 win over St. Mary’s at the Denver Broncos’ 7-on-7 tournament June 20 at All City Stadium.

  • Local teams to test their mettle...

The Friday night lights will be shining on the Heritage and Chatfield High School football teams this week. However, the action won’t be with helmets and pads on the gridiron.

  • Ex-Hawk Jones top prospect in...

Kent Murphy has coached a number of great players, many who’ve gone on to play Division I college hockey. Though Seth Jones is not one of those college prospects, he certainly fits the bill as one of the better players. Maybe even the best.
A former Littleton Hawks and Colorado Thunderbirds player back when his father, Popeye Jones, played for the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, Jones’ formative years on the ice came under the coaching of Murphy and Angelo Ricci. Now he’s being considered the top prospect in the June 30 NHL entry draft.

  • Broncos’ 7-on-7 gives HS teams a...

DENVER — The deer-in-the-headlights look is slowly disappearing for Columbine junior-to-be Michael Tait. Sparingly used on the Rebels’ varsity football team last season, Tait fine-tuned his quarterbacking skills at the JV level. But at the Denver Broncos’ annual 7-on-7 football tournament June 20 at All City Stadium, his passing skills were out there for all to see.

  • Rogers joins twin in the pros

Tyler Rogers was sitting on the couch in his brother’s apartment in Fort Myers, Fla., watching the webcast of the annual Major League Baseball amateur draft. It was late on June 7, with just a handful of picks left in the 10th round and his name yet to be called.
Rogers, who had watched the broadcast all day, shut his computer down but still had it up on the TV. He didn’t think he would be drafted, at least not on this night. Then the 6-foot-4, 190-pound right-handed reliever heard his name called as the 312th selection overall by the San Francisco Giants.
