  • Rebels’ perseverance and will...

DENVER — Cameron McDondle showed up to the first day of fall practice 75 minutes late, a yellow physical card in hand. Columbine’s star running back, coming off a 1,583-yard campaign a season earlier, couldn’t practice until that formality was addressed.
It was a small bump in the road, but it was a bump. And there were plenty of those for the Rebels in 2011. Even so, when the dust cleared, Columbine, like it had done four times in the previous 12 years, was standing above all the rest in 5A.

  • Columbine Rebels capture 5A...

DENVER -- Bernard McDondle rushed for 249 yards and two touchdowns and older brother Cameron McDondle rushed for two more scores and threw for another as the Columbine Rebels, seeded No. 1 in 5A, won their fifth state football championship since 1999 and first in five years on Dec. 3 with a 41-31 win over Lakewood at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

Edwards was chosen for the team by 7’s coach Emil Signes. She is one of only 12 players to be selected.

LAKEWOOD — It was just two plays. Just 33 seconds. But Cameron and Bernard McDondle covered 174 yards on those back-to-back offensive plays for Columbine. That’s all it took for the Rebels.
Just over two minutes apart, first Cameron McDondle for 86 yards and then younger brother Bernard for 88, for all intents and purposes, ran Columbine back into the 5A state football championship game on Nov. 26 at Jefferson County Stadium for the first time in five years.

  • Columbine chugging right along

LAKEWOOD — The further one goes into the playoffs games aren’t supposed to be as lopsided as Columbine’s 35-14 win over Highlands Ranch was on Nov. 19 at Jeffco Stadium. Not even the final score does justice for the way the Rebels’ defense contained the visiting Falcons.
“Our defense has played great all year to be honest with you. They bend a little, but never break. They keep teams out of the end zone,” Columbine head coach Andy Lowry said.
