LAKEWOOD — McKenna Spillar practically surprised herself. The Dakota Ridge junior, with 100 meters to go in the girls’ 3,200 meters May 17 at the 5A state track and field championships, was in the lead. She couldn’t believe it.
But the first-year state qualifier also knew, since Pomona’s Alaina Anderson and Rangeview’s Rikki Gonzales were nipping at her heels, that she had to remain focused. She, as Spillar said, gave it everything she had.
That’s why she’s now a state champion.
