  • Bruins boot Rebels from playoffs

    GREENWOOD VILLAGE — Fans on both sides of the stands knew that if the Class 5A state football semifinal between Cherry Creek and Columbine came down to a field goal, the Bruins would have no problems racking up three points between the uprights.

    Unfortunately for Columbine, that’s exactly what the Nov. 22 game came down to.

    RC Willenbrock scored the game-winner with just two seconds remaining on the clock to give Cherry Creek the 27-25 victory at the Stutler Bowl. The Bruins will play Mullen in the state championship Nov. 29 at Invesco Field.

  • Upset bid comes up short

    LAKEWOOD — The Rodney Dangerfield of the Class 4A state football playoffs finally got its respect.

    Unfortunately for Dakota Ridge, a win didn’t accompany it.

    The No. 14 Eagles gave the No. 2 Farmers of Wheat Ridge all they could handle Nov. 22 at Jefferson County Stadium, but ultimately fell short 21-16 in a hard-fought game.

  • Eagles soar into semis

    LAKEWOOD — Everything almost went according to plan for Dakota Ridge in its playoff game against Longmont.

    And that was almost very, very bad.

    “We kind of went with the plan that if they were going to beat us, they were going to have to beat us throwing,” Eagles football coach Ron Woitalewicz said. “I just didn’t think they were going to get 7,000 yards, or whatever it was, throwing.”

    Actually, it was 329 yards and five touchdowns passes from Trojans’ run-first quarterback Jake Johnson.

  • Rebels get revenge, bounce...

    ARVADA — The recipe for success has always been simple for Columbine.

    Run the ball with power.

    Play lights-out defense.

    The Rebels did both Nov. 14 in their rematch with Pomona in the Class 5A quarterfinals, grinding out a 23-8 victory in the process. The No. 5 Rebels (11-1) advance to the semifinals and will face No. 9 Cherry Creek (10-2) Nov. 22 at 1 p.m. at the Stutler Bowl.

    The quarterfinal rematch between the two Jefferson County rivals was, at least for Columbine, a stark contrast to the initial encounter.

  • Melton makes Eagles run

    LAKEWOOD — Picture this: A workhorse running back.

    The kid has got to be fast, right? Durable. Tough. Have a real nose for the end zone. Get you those tough yards between the tackles. When times are rough – and they always are at some point in the playoffs – you have to be able to hitch your offense to him and ride his legs to victory.

    That describes Eagles running back Andrew Melton perfectly, even if the senior doesn’t always look the part.

  • Defense rises to the occasion

    ARVADA — Nathan Wiggins wasn’t really sure what happened with 8 minutes, 43 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

    The Pomona Panthers were trying to pick on him at the North Area Athletic Complex as they trailed the Columbine Rebels 23-8. The home team was going for a home run and Wiggins was their prey.

  • Rebels roll into quarters

    LAKEWOOD — Columbine and Arvada West each learned an important lesson Nov. 8.

    The Rebels learned that they must always take responsibility for their actions – both on and off the field – following the suspension of eight players who were cited for underage possession of alcohol while attending a party last weekend.

    Arvada West learned that Columbine is still Columbine, regardless of who is – and isn’t – in uniform.

  • Rebels bounced early from state...

    DENVER — The turning point came early for the Columbine Rebels, and they quickly found themselves on a long and lonely road.

    Faced with a pivotal Class 5A state volleyball tournament game bright and early the morning of Nov. 7, the Rebels rallied to force a fifth game against Highlands Ranch. The Rebels (22-7) got down 4-0, then 7-2, then 10-3 before losing the decisive game 15-9.

    “They wanted it more than we did,” Rebels coach Kathy Miks said.

  • Panthers pounce on Chargers

    LAKEWOOD — The 2008 football season for Chatfield had been littered with close games.

    It ended with a blowout.

    Unable to contain Pomona’s Donovan Bowens, who rushed for 157 yards and a pair of touchdowns, the No. 20 Chargers wound up on the short side of a 28-3 score Nov. 8 in a Class 5A state playoff second round game at Jefferson County Stadium.

    Pomona, the No. 4 seed in the 32-team field, advances to the quarterfinals where they will take on No. 5 Columbine. The Chargers end the season with a 6-5 record.
