In the beginning, the smile didn’t come easy.

Abbie Daurio is by no means an evil girl; quite the contrary, she’s very polite and nice when you talk to her.

But, when she decided to take up cheerleading three years ago, it was the smile that always seemed to trip her up.

“I was focusing so much on getting the routines down that I would always have a hard time with it,” Daurio said.

The smile comes much easier now for Daurio, and, most likely, for the rest of the Front Range Christian School cheer team.

Jeffrey Harris had one person to thank for his hat trick Dec. 3 against rival Columbine.

"My dad," the Chatfield junior said with a hint of a grin.

Harris got crossways with his father, who implemented a one-period suspension for his son. When Harris made bail he needed a little more than six minutes to score his first goal and spark Chatfield to a 6-2 season-opening victory over the Rebels before a standing-room-only crowd at The Edge Ice Arena.

GREENWOOD VILLAGE — Fans on both sides of the stands knew that if the Class 5A state football semifinal between Cherry Creek and Columbine came down to a field goal, the Bruins would have no problems racking up three points between the uprights.

Unfortunately for Columbine, that’s exactly what the Nov. 22 game came down to.

RC Willenbrock scored the game-winner with just two seconds remaining on the clock to give Cherry Creek the 27-25 victory at the Stutler Bowl. The Bruins will play Mullen in the state championship Nov. 29 at Invesco Field.

It was a heartbreaking day Nov. 22 for supporters of Dakota Ridge and Columbine high schools.
