  • Late lead slips from Chargers

Anyone who left the game early Oct. 26 at Littleton Public Schools Stadium because it was too cold to stay until the end missed quite an amazing ending when the Arapahoe Warriors defeated the Chatfield Chargers 40-28, claiming the 5A Super 6 conference title.
In the first half, the ninth-ranked Chargers (6-3, 3-2 5A Super 6) looked like they had a chip on their shoulder as the dominated the field. Chatfield scored on the first play of the game when Chatfield junior Austin Steinhoff ran 72 yards untouched.

  • Chargers keep footing to advance

LAKEWOOD — Heavy rain pelted the Lakewood Memorial Field and made it somewhat slippery for both Chatfield and Rocky Mountain players in their 5A boys soccer state playoff opener Oct. 24. But  the pre-winter storm that turned to snow late couldn’t rain on the Chargers’ parade.

  • Top scores tough to be found at...

LAKEWOOD — Gymnastics in the Jeffco League is like a stacked deck, loaded with highly skilled, competitive gymnasts, which makes for a great show at state. But at league competition it makes for a downright spectacle.
The Jeffco League gymnastics championships was held at Bear Creek High School on Oct. 20. The conference finals are just a primer for regionals, which will be held Oct. 26. Teams have to qualify their gymnasts at regionals if they want a shot at state, but there are so many variables that make getting to state nerve-wracking.

LAKEWOOD — It was like a movie that took a little too long to get going. But, boy, once it did, there were fireworks. Chatfield and Dakota Ridge played a thrilling final 25 minutes in the regular-season finale, won 2-1 by the Chargers on Oct. 17 at Lakewood Memorial Field.
The two squads combined for three goals in a five-minute span late in the second half, including two from Chatfield sophomore Ben Overholt that ultimately proved to be too much for a pesky Dakota Ridge team to overcome.

  • Eagles girls, boys qualify for...

McKenna Spillar and Vanessa Gonzalez got to experience the feeling of going to the 5A state cross country championships last season, but it wasn’t a completely fulfilling trip. That’s because their teammates weren’t with them. That won’t be a problem in 2012.
Led by Spillar’s third-place finish in 18 minutes, 35 seconds, Dakota Ridge placed second as a team — one of five teams eligible to qualify for state — with 65 points at the 5A Region 1 cross country championships at Clement Park on Oct. 18.

  • Falcons take advantage of...

IDAHO SPRINGS — Whether it was Clear Creek’s miscommunication on offense or the injuries adding up or just the smash-mouth brand of football Front Range Christian played, it all added up to the same result.
Clear Creek turned the ball over six times — five times in the first half — and Front Range Christian’s Tanner Matoaba rushed for two touchdowns in the Falcons’ 27-7 victory Oct. 19 at Golddigger Stadium.

  • Loss can’t take away from...

AURORA — A year earlier, Chatfield’s season, which included a 5A Jeffco League title, ended a week earlier than it thought it might at regionals. And though the Lady Chargers won the same number of games in 2012 as it did in 2011, but didn’t repeat as conference champions they arguably had a better season. A berth in the 5A state tournament, for all intents and purposes, proved that.
And though Chatfield left Aurora Sports Park with a 4-2 defeat to Rock Canyon in the state quarterfinals on Oct. 19, the Lady Chargers proved that they belonged.

AURORA – The Dakota Ridge Lady Eagles – the 5A Jeffco League and Region 8 champions, fell to fourth-seeded Loveland, 3-1, in the 5A state softball championship game on Oct. 20 at Aurora Sports Complex.
Addie Coldiron had a two-run double in the fourth and pitcher Cassidy Smith added an insurance run with a solo homer in the top of the seventh for Loveland (22-2), which upended top-seed and five-time defending state champion Legacy in the semifinals earlier in the day.
