  • Chatfield hoops advances to...

    DENVER — It took Chatfield to work a little overtime, but for the first time since 1996 the Chargers advanced to the Final Four of the Class 5A boys basketball state tournament.

    The 5A Jeffco League champions defeated Cherry Creek 63-55 in overtime March 5 at the Denver Coliseum. In the Chatfield’s first trip to the Great 8 since 2001, the No. 2 seed Chargers outscored No. 4-seeded Bruins 13-5 in overtime to take the eight-point victory.

  • Dakota Ridge rally falls short

    AURORA — Urgency hit Dakota Ridge’s boys basketball team like a ton of bricks in the fourth quarter March 2 at Regis Jesuit High School.

    The Eagles trailed by a dozen points — 39-27 — to the No. 2-seeded Regis heading into the final eight minutes. With their season on the line, No. 3 seed Dakota Ridge (17-8 record) put on a furious rally attempt scoring 26 points in the fourth quarter in the Class 5A state tournament Sweet 16 game.

    HIGHLANDS RANCH — It was not a “Super Tuesday” for Dakota Ridge on the basketball court.

    The Eagles were looking for an epic upset against No. 1 seed Highlands Ranch (24-1 record) on the Falcons’ home court. However, it wasn’t meant to be. Dakota Ridge’s girls hoops season ended with a 70-41 loss in the round of 16 in the Class 5A state tournament.

    LONGMONT — The first chapter in the new book of D’Evelyn boys basketball program came to a close Feb. 27.

    The Jaguars lost 66-44 to No. 1 seed Longmont on the Trojans’ home court in a Class 4A state tournament Sweet 16 game to bring the season to an end for D’Evelyn (15-10 record).

    LITTLETON — One question will never be answered: How good would Dakota Ridge’s girls basketball team be if Diane Thompson stepped in as head coach a few years ago?

     “Better late than never,” Dakota Ridge senior Becky Holley said having Thompson become the fourth varsity coach for the current group of seniors. “We have an amazing coach. She has helped us improve more than we have the past two years. We’re having a great final run with the best coach we could have.”

    LITTLETON — While early 3-pointers ripping through the nylon nets brought Chatfield’s student section into a frenzy, it was four shots at the rim that gave the Charger faithful something to really cheer about in the end on Feb. 27.

    Baskets in the paint by Chatfield’s Titus Reed, Josh Frenette, Riley Welch and Cameron Pearson in the final minutes allowed the Class 5A Jeffco League champions to escape with a 78-71 second-round state playoff victory against Aurora Central.
