    GIRLS BASKETBALL
    Griffiths leads Lady Falcons to fourth consecutive victory
    COLORADO SPRINGS — Front Range Christian broke open a tied ballgame in the second half, outscoring Colorado Springs Christian School 22-13 en route to a 39-30 victory on Dec. 15.
    Leigh Griffiths led the Lady Falcons with 14 points. Shelby Bloomquist added seven.
    Front Range Christian improved to 4-0 on the season.

  • Rebels win Classic on Snow’s...

    The Columbine Rebels knew that they had a lot on the line. A win against Chaparral meant that they would be the undefeated winner of the Columbine Classic. A loss meant that they would be in a three-way tie for first place.
    And by the end of the last game in the series — Columbine vs. Chaparral — the game clocked ran painstakingly slow. With 2 minutes, 23 seconds left in the game, the score was tied 48-48.

  • Greene, Chargers fend off Rebels

    Logan Greene wasn’t sure what to expect. The Chatfield senior forward didn’t know if his first-period goal would be enough. After all, the Chargers were playing arch-rival Columbine in front of a standing-room only crowd at the Edge Ice Arena on Dec. 14.
    And these games — no matter whether it’s a non-conference affair as this one was or a league matchup — you can pretty much throw the record books out the window. These are usually about personal pride.

  • Chatfield's Hobbs diving...

    THORNTON — Averly Hobbs walks around the pool with her iPod plugged in listening to fast, upbeat music. It pumps her up.
    She forgets about everything and everybody around her to prepare for her next dive, and she’ll do jumping jacks to break her nerves. Oh, and yeah, she’ll be chewing on her ever-present gum.

    BOYS BASKETBALL
    Snow, Rebels rally in the fourth to knock off Littleton
    Jon Snow scored a game-high 30 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as Columbine bounced back from its first loss of the season to topple Littleton, 66-58, on Dec. 6.
    The Rebels (2-1) trailed 50-45 after three quarters, but rallied to outscore the visiting Lions 21-8 over the final eight minutes.
    Tyler McMinimee added 17 points, which included three 3-pointers.
    Andrew Malmstrom led Litttleton (2-3) with 23 points.

  • Cyclones block Eagles’ direction

    The saying, ‘when a door closes a window opens’ doesn’t mention anything about screens blocking those doors and windows. Such was the case for the Dakota Ridge Lady Eagles when they lost 66-40 to the Pueblo West Cyclones at home on Dec. 8 at the Battle at the Ridge tournament.
    The Lady Cyclones put up a screen so tight under the net that it closed the doors and windows of opportunity for host Dakota Ridge.

  • Defensive pressure turns game...

    DENVER — Anthony Shoeboot wouldn’t take credit for his play on defense. The Chatfield senior figures he was just one part of the equation. But his guarding of Mullen’s inbound play certainly played havoc on the Mustangs during their Dec. 8 game at Hutchison Field House.
    Chatfield’s full-court pressure defense ignited a half-closing 12-4 run, and the Chargers never trailed again in an 86-67 victory.

  • Power play proves vital for...

    If you were at the concession stand a little too long, you probably missed it.
    Chatfield scored four goals in the first five minutes of the second period to turn a 1-1 tie into a comfortable lead over Dakota Ridge on Dec. 9 at the Edge Ice Arena. The teams were even the rest of the way, but the damage was done as the Chargers came away with a 7-3 victory over the Eagles.

  • Harriman Lake Park to remain...

    Residents will have to wait a few months more before they can use Harriman Lake Park, which has been closed since November 2011 for a project to rebuild the dam. 

    The park, at South Kipling Parkway and West Quincy Avenue, includes a 1.4-mile trail around the lake. Foothills Park & Recreation District has leased much of the park from Denver Water since 1995. Foothills has also leased 11 acres southwest of the lake from Jefferson County Open Space for 15 years.
