Lady Eagles rolling along, beat D’Evelyn to go to 6-0

DENVER  — Cam Mammenga was 3-for-3 with two runs batted in and McKenna Pendergraft tripled and drove in two runs as Dakota Ridge improved to 6-0 with a 9-4 win over host D’Evelyn on Sept. 1.
Bri Arneach walked three and struck out three for the win.
Gomez, Lady Rebels blank Fairview for second win.
Sarah Kastanek and Taryn Rothrock drove in two runs each as Columbine (2-1) shut out Fairview, 7-0, on Sept. 1.

  • Eagles straighten things out

CONIFER — Pitch after pitch after pitch BrookLynn York was lacing the ball just foul. She nearly hit teammate Sierra Jones in the on-deck circle. She just missed head coach Dave Atencio standing in the third-base box. But once she figured out how to get the ball inside the line, just past Conifer third baseman Mackenzie Long, it opened the floodgates for Dakota Ridge.

  • Leipheimer, state big winners at...

DENVER — About the only thing that was hotter than cyclist Levi Leipheimer this week, especially on Aug. 28 — the final day of the week-long inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge — was the weather.

It was another hot one, as temperatures scorched an overflowing crowd of more than 200,000 during Stage 6 from Golden to Lookout Mountain into downtown Denver, with it topping out at a record 96 degrees. But it couldn’t stop Leipheimer.

  • Deer Creek Challenge is a...

The Deer Creek Challenge doesn’t cut cyclists any slack. In the midst of the second annual “Toughest Century in United States,” participants climbed 12,751-feet in elevation. Even the final stretch to the finish line is uphill.

“To put on something that is the most on anything, is unusual,” Pat Downing, the ride founder and director, said. “To be able to do this in our own backyard, and have it be the hardest in the country, is great.”

  • Speedy Davis found his niche

Front Range Christian senior halfback Kyle Davis is a hybrid athlete, like a Prius — quiet, quick and more than capable of being effective.

Unlike other running backs who flaunt their talent like a tricked-out Hummer, like Bo Jackson, Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton, Davis controls the field in a way that makes the defensive line wonder if that was the wind that just blew or if their man had just run by.

  • Senior uses tragedy to better...

Some might say that life has been unfair to Trace Pozek. The Dakota Ridge senior lost his father, Benjamin, to heart disease at the age of 62 on the first day of school last year. The unexpected death shook his foundation, but not his will.
