  • Erickson out to prove critics...

LAKEWOOD — Andrew Erickson has his critics, and he wants to show them just exactly who he is and what he’s made of.

  • Eagles’ Yutzy wins 100th

Curi Yutzy wasn’t sure what all the fuss was about after his seventh-ranked Dakota Ridge Eagles rolled to a 67-47 home victory over Columbine on Feb. 6. As it turned out, it was about him.

Dakota Ridge’s second victory over the Rebels this season, including a 50-45 win at Columbine on Jan. 14, marked the 100th win in Yutzy’s seven seasons as head coach.

  • Hobbs ready for last shot at...

ARVADA — Averly Hobbs is one of the state’s best 5A divers. Need proof? She’s finished in the top four each of the past three seasons — taking fourth in 2012, second in 2013 and third last year. So this year, with the state meet scheduled for Feb. 13-14 at the Edora Pool Ice Center, she is among the favorites again.

  • Kisiel, Lady Cougars sweep host...

History repeated itself for the Evergreen Lady Cougars’ basketball team as they bested the Littleton Lions, 52-43, on Jan. 31 at the Lions Den, giving them their second win against the Lady Lions this season.

“Every time we come (to Littleton) we expect to play a scrappy game,” said Evergreen girls basketball head coach Amy Bahl. “But we always manage to pull out the win.”

EVERGREEN — Injuries and illness have made for a trying season for Evergreen’s boys basketball team, especially in 4A Jeffco League play. But somehow the Cougars head into the next-to-last week of the regular season on a two-game-winning streak, though, par for the course, it wasn’t easy.

  • Quick-striking Eagles push...

Nine seconds. That’s all the time that it took for the Dakota Ridge Eagles to spoil Senior Night for Columbine.

First-period goals from Tony Carpenito and Graehm Konsella — the first off a turnover and the second just 4 seconds after a Columbine penalty — ignited sixth-ranked Dakota Ridge to a 7-2 victory over 10th-ranked Columbine on Jan. 31 at The Edge Ice Arena.

  • ‘Unwillingness to give up’

Brogan Wallin remembers the play vividly. The then-Dakota Ridge junior, playing for her Front Range Volleyball Club team at the Colorado Crossroads national qualifier tournament in Denver, went up for a tight pass to pull the ball back to her team’s side. She came down awkwardly on her right leg, her ACL shattered.

  • Lady Chargers add state...

ARVADA — Frustration could’ve easily set in for Chatfield Senior swimmer Abby Oglesby. So many times this season, she been close to qualifying for the 5A state meet in the 50-yard freestyle only to come up short.

After handling Standley Lake for the second time this season, the Dakota Ridge hockey team proclaimed itself ready for The Push.
“Tonight was that stepping stone,” head coach Alec Hines said after his sixth-ranked Eagles peppered the Gators with 54 shots on goal and improved to 9-1 overall and 4-1 in the Foothills League with a 5-1 victory Jan. 24 at The Edge Ice Arena. “We’re getting into the bulk of our season, and we put the work in tonight.”

  • Patient Rebels hold Chatfield in...

Eighteen minutes, 50 seconds. That’s an eternity in a basketball game. That’s also how long it took the Chatfield Lady Chargers to make a field goal — a 3-pointer at that — in a 51-29 loss at rival Columbine on Jan. 23.
