LAKEWOOD — Kelly Pickens’ start to the 2007-08 girls basketball season couldn’t have gone much worse.
On the first day of practice at Chatfield Senior High School, the senior forward broke the metacarpal bone in her left hand.
CENTENNIAL — After picking up two early fouls, Dakota Ridge’s Jennelle Branting was relegated to the role of spectator as the rest of her Eagle teammates battled with Arapahoe last Wednesday.
If only the Columbine girls basketball team could have sweet dreams, then maybe they could rebound from some recent losses and improve to a winning record in 2008.
The Rebels took a 54-48 home loss to Heritage in a Class 5A nonleague game Friday night, falling to 3-5 on the season.
AURORA — If the Regis Raiders really are the best girls basketball team in the state, Dakota Ridge can take pride in beating them for 12 minutes, 47 seconds on Saturday.
The other 19 minutes, 13 seconds? Not so much.
CASTLE ROCK — Jeff Mages didn’t know how his young squad would look in its first game back since the winter break.
Apparently, they grew up a little bit more.
CENTENNIAL — Jeff Wennberg’s return to Arapahoe, where he coached for one season, looked like a disaster in the making Friday night.
The Columbine girls basketball team got a reminder Thursday that all four quarters in a game are crucial.
The Rebels took a 55-49 Class 5A nonleague loss to Denver East after falling flat in the second quarter and scoring just six points – four of which came from the foul line.
For the Dakota Ridge boys basketball team, the approach to every game is simple.
The goal is to always “play hard, play smart, play together and play with pride.”
It was a game only a goalie could appreciate.
The old saying, “Practice makes perfect” does not always apply.
But, sometimes it comes close.
Just ask the Chatfield girls basketball team.
