  • Charging into the Final Four

    DENVER — The effort of the many outweighed the effort of the one March 5 at the Denver Coliseum.

    Chatfield’s boys basketball team used its depth and balance to outlast and overcome the remarkable individual performance of Cherry Creek senior Will Halfon. The Chargers reeled in a 63-55 overtime victory despite 38 points from Halfon.

  • Chatfield puts Jeffco back on 5A...

    DENVER — It’s been awhile since Jeffco produced a contender for the Class 5A boys basketball state title.

    For more than a decade, no Jeffco team had even made it to the Final Four in the biggest classification of the boys hoops state tournament. Chatfield ended that drought March 5 with its 63-55 overtime victory against Cherry Creek in the Great 8.

    HIGHLANDS RANCH — Diane Thompson admits she wasn’t sure how her first year as Dakota Ridge’s girls basketball coach would go.

     “I didn’t know what I had. After that first week I thought, maybe we are OK,” Thompson said March 1 after the Eagles’ season ended at Highlands Ranch High School with a 70-41 loss. “It was kind of a rollercoaster season. I’ve got to give it to the kids. We aren’t very big. We are very crafty.”

  • Dakota Ridge takes pride in...

    AURORA — It’s 2 minutes and 10 seconds Dakota Ridge’s basketball team would like back.

    The Eagles led 14-12 on No. 2 seed Regis with about five minutes to play in the second quarter March 2 at Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora. The Raiders (22-4 record) suddenly went on a 11-0 run over 130 seconds to snag a 23-14 lead thanks to some Dakota Ridge (17-8) turnovers that led to some transition buckets for Regis.

  • D’Evelyn bows out to rival

    EVERGREEN — It felt like an end of an era as D’Evelyn’s girls basketball players filed out of their locker room March 4 at Evergreen High School.

    The Jaguars suffered a season-ending 49-26 loss to Jeffco rival Evergreen in the 4A Great 8 state tournament game. Not only did the loss close the season for D’Evelyn (16-10 record), but also it saw the likes of Lexi Reed and Aubrey Sotolongo walking off the basketball court together for the last time.

  • Chatfield hoops advances to...

    DENVER — It took Chatfield to work a little overtime, but for the first time since 1996 the Chargers advanced to the Final Four of the Class 5A boys basketball state tournament.

    The 5A Jeffco League champions defeated Cherry Creek 63-55 in overtime March 5 at the Denver Coliseum. In the Chatfield’s first trip to the Great 8 since 2001, the No. 2 seed Chargers outscored No. 4-seeded Bruins 13-5 in overtime to take the eight-point victory.

  • Dakota Ridge rally falls short

    AURORA — Urgency hit Dakota Ridge’s boys basketball team like a ton of bricks in the fourth quarter March 2 at Regis Jesuit High School.

    The Eagles trailed by a dozen points — 39-27 — to the No. 2-seeded Regis heading into the final eight minutes. With their season on the line, No. 3 seed Dakota Ridge (17-8 record) put on a furious rally attempt scoring 26 points in the fourth quarter in the Class 5A state tournament Sweet 16 game.

  • Playoff run ends for Dakota...

    HIGHLANDS RANCH — It was not a “Super Tuesday” for Dakota Ridge on the basketball court.

    The Eagles were looking for an epic upset against No. 1 seed Highlands Ranch (24-1 record) on the Falcons’ home court. However, it wasn’t meant to be. Dakota Ridge’s girls hoops season ended with a 70-41 loss in the round of 16 in the Class 5A state tournament.

  • Chargers surge late to beat...

    LITTLETON — While early 3-pointers ripping through the nylon nets brought Chatfield’s student section into a frenzy, it was four shots at the rim that gave the Charger faithful something to really cheer about in the end on Feb. 27.

    Baskets in the paint by Chatfield’s Titus Reed, Josh Frenette, Riley Welch and Cameron Pearson in the final minutes allowed the Class 5A Jeffco League champions to escape with a 78-71 second-round state playoff victory against Aurora Central.
