Play defense, rebound, run and score — and repeat.

That was definitely the philosophy for Chatfield’s boys basketball team Dec. 13 facing an athletic and dangerous Far Northeast squad. Chatfield (5-1) used its defensive pressure and focus to control the boards on both ends of the court to run away with a 72-47 home victory.

  • Dinegar, Jaguars pull away from ...

DENVER — Just 3 minutes into the game and Charles Dinegar was already having himself a game. The D’Evelyn junior had scored the team’s first nine points and was creating a defensive mismatch for the Conifer Lobos on Dec. 16. That’s when Conifer employed a 1-3-1 zone intended to slow Dinegar down.

DENVER — The Chatfield girls basketball team’s December to remember began as a month to forget. Already beginning the season without sophomore Emma Talbot, the top returning 3-point shooter, the Lady Chargers lost their leader, senior Grace Koza, to a torn ACL in the first quarter of the opening game.

THORNTON — Peyton Wayment’s junior season in 2016 wasn’t a disappointment — fifth place in the 500-yard freestyle in the 5A state meet is nothing to hang your head over. But the Chatfield distance swimmer knew she could do better in 2017.

Determined to end her high school career with a bigger splash, Wayment vowed to leave no stone unturned.

  • Jaguars’ Selin wins freestyle...

THORNTON — Abbey Selin, by her own admission, was pretty out of shape, and the D’Evelyn junior didn’t know what to expect coming into the 3A state swimming championships on Friday at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center.

“It’s been a rough year,” Selin said.

Drama has rarely unfolded during Chatfield’s run to within one victory of a second straight unbeaten season in 5A Jeffco League boys basketball, and it was no different on Valentine’s Day after a 97-57 home rout of Dakota Ridge.

  • State wrestling qualifiers

The following is a list of area grapplers from Chatfield and Columbine high schools who’ve qualified for the 2017 state wrestling championships. Both will compete in the 5A competition, which begins Thursday at 7:15 p.m. with the preliminary rounds at the Pepsi Center.

There might not be a tougher three-game stretch for Dakota Ridge’s girls basketball team the rest of the season after what the Lady Eagles went through to start the year.

Dakota Ridge opened the 2016-17 campaign against Class 5A defending state champion ThunderRidge, two-time defending 4A state champion Valor Christian and perennial state contender Broomfield.

  • Mat time key for Rebels at...

Cameron Kuykendall had a way of summing up Columbine’s wrestling season. It’s not about wins and losses, but about mat time. That was evident Dec. 10 at the Columbine Invitational.

  • Miks, Chargers methodical in...

BOULDER — It was just another day at the office for Joe Miks. OK, maybe not. But the Chatfield senior certainly had a field day on the scoreboard Dec. 8 at Boulder High School.

That’s because he scored a game-high 28 points — the second-most in his varsity career — in leading Chatfield to a 70-58 win over the host Panthers. But how many points he scored was of little consequence to Miks as long as Chatfield won for the third time in four games this season.
