    THORNTON — Peyton Wayment’s junior season in 2016 wasn’t a disappointment — fifth place in the 500-yard freestyle in the 5A state meet is nothing to hang your head over. But the Chatfield distance swimmer knew she could do better in 2017.

    Determined to end her high school career with a bigger splash, Wayment vowed to leave no stone unturned.

    WESTMINSTER — Missed opportunities early proved costly for the Chatfield Chargers. A pair of power plays in the opening seven minutes went unanswered, while host Standley Lake made the most of its man-advantage, scoring a pair of power-play goals in a 5-2 victory Feb. 3 at the Promenade Ice Centre.

    ARVADA — Many assume swimmers don’t sweat when they race. Then again, many people don’t understand the pressure that comes with having just one meet left with which to qualify for state competition.

    Through sweat and sacrifice, the Chatfield Lady Chargers took first place at the 5A Jeffco League finals at Meyers Pool on Feb. 3-4 with 408.5 points, edging out rival Ralston Valley.

    There were any number of reasons for the Chatfield Chargers to have a letdown Feb. 1 against Lakewood. After all, the Chargers entered the 5A Jeffco League contest having won 24 straight conference tilts. They hadn’t lost in the league in nearly two years. Shoot, Lakewood hadn’t beaten Chatfield in the previous 14 encounters.

    ARVADA — Ten days after making program history with its first-ever win over Ralston Valley, the Dakota Ridge hockey team had an opportunity to double down by making it a Foothills League sweep of the Mustangs.

    DENVER — Sun Tzu famously said,  “If you know the enemy and yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.” The Evergreen Lady Cougars showed no signs of fear at they defeated host D’Evelyn 49-39 on Jan. 27.

    This was the second time the second-ranked Lady Cougars have defeated the Lady Jaguars this season. The last time the played one another Evergreen won 56-43 at home.

    EVERGREEN ­— Sometimes emotions can be a motivator for a team. 

    For Rhys Pennington-Sayler and the Evergreen Cougars, the raw passion the senior guard displayed after his rebound putback midway through the third quarter was the motivator the Cougars needed against visiting D’Evelyn on Jan. 27.

  • Alward, Rebels fend off Chargers

    They sayit’s now how you start but how you finish that matters. In the case of the Columbine Lady Rebels, the opposite would most definitely be true in defining their Jan. 25 rivalry game with Chatfield.

    A strong start — a 15-1 run to end the first quarter and a 17-point lead in the third quarter — proved to be enough as host Columbine held off a furious late charge from Chatfield for a 38-33 win.
