  • Rebels’ Tait turns full...

It was springtime, yet Michael Tait was already looking ahead. Sure, the multi-sport Columbine High athlete was having a stellar baseball season, but his mind was pondering what was to come this fall. In particular, playing football and golf in the same season again.

  • BROTHERS IN ARMS

The life of a minor league baseball player isn’t always glamorous. There is a lot of bus time, roadside motels and catering tables serving up lunch meat and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. After the game, dinner, in all likelihood, is leftover concession stand food, and then you do it all over again the next day.

One’s apartment may have the bare essentials — an air mattress, suitcase, basic furniture and no air conditioning. But it’s the life that twin brothers Taylor and Tyler Rogers share, be it thousands of miles apart.

  • Arvada site appears to be...

A site in Arvada appears to be the leading contender for a county-owned public shooting range.

A working group organized by Jeffco Parks and Open Space has narrowed the search to five locations, including the site in Arvada, which is currently leased by Pioneer Sand and Gravel as a quarry.

Tom Hoby, director of Parks and Open Space, said the working group tried to find property that was within a 30-minute drive of a major county intersection.

Close to 1,000 people have registered to run the first Revel Rockies half-marathon/marathon on Aug. 17 — a downhill course from Squaw Pass Road east past Red Rocks to Bandimere Speedway.

Downhill courses are growing in popularity as runners realize they can log “personal best” race times and enjoy great scenery along the way, said Anna Ryan, race director. Revel Rockies also is a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon, Ryan said. It currently costs $104.99 to register for the Revel Rockies marathon and $84.99 for the half-marathon.

If summer baseball is a harbinger for the following spring’s high school season, the forecast is bright for Dakota Ridge and Chatfield in 2015.

The Jeffco League rivals placed 1-2 at the AABC’s Connie Mack 17-and-under state tournament at Cherokee Trail, with Dakota Ridge going unbeaten and prevailing 6-3 in the July 20 championship game, its second win over Chatfield, which suffered no other losses.

  • Putting the fun in fundamentals

The 100-degree heat of summer didn’t deter 98 lacrosse campers — 80 kids ages 7 to 15 and 18 high school-aged players — from soaking in all the knowledge given to them at Cornerstone Park.

From simple skill sets to pick and rolls, Colorado Mammoth players imparted their wealth of knowledge at the team’s second annual lacrosse camp July 21-22 in hopes of furthering the rapidly growing development of the sport in the Rocky Mountain region.

  • Local promoters courting bike...

Bicycle racers could climb from Golden to Evergreen and Echo Lake before cruising down through Idaho Springs in one stage of the 2016 USA Pro Challenge, if local promoters get their way.

National race organizers usually plan the seven-day bike race two years in advance, said Michael Raber, a bicyclist and race promoter who lives in Clear Creek County.
