LAKEWOOD — It might not have surpassed the special memories on the football field at Jeffco Stadium, but Dakota Ridge senior Cale Ferrin found the right way to end his prep sports career.

Ferrin, who placed third in the high jump at the 5A Jeffco League Championships the previous week, finished fourth at the state meet May 19.

THORNTON — The transition has come full circle for Jack Moranetz.

The D’Evelyn sophomore swimmer is a bona fide breaststroker. Oh, he’ll still swim freestyle races and maybe even the individual medley, especially if he gets his butterfly up to par.

ENGLEWOOD — Sonorah Hunter’s first child isn’t due until August, yet she is already accustomed to molding today’s youth.

  • Hume finishes on the state...

LAKEWOOD — It was admittedly an emotional state track and field meet for Dakota Ridge senior Cayli Hume.

First there was the dilemma of whether Hume would run the anchor leg in the first event on the track May 19 at Jeffco Stadium. The Eagles’ 800-meter medley relay broke the school record twice in the two weeks leading up to the three-day state meet and came in with the seventh best qualifying time.

  • Quest for a second state title...

PARKER — It was one of those days where anything that could go wrong went wrong for Columbine’s girls soccer team.

Mountain Vista junior Katie Joella scored back-to-back goals in two minutes in the first half. The Golden Eagles added a third first-half goal on a shot by sophomore Maisie Paulson in the 33rd minute to give Mountain Vista a commanding 3-0 lead in the Class 5A state semifinal game May 21 at Echo Park Automotive Stadium in Parker.

  • That’s a wrap for Reed

LAKEWOOD — Seniors Lexi Reed and Katie Rainsberger embraced after both finished up their impressive prep careers May 21 at Jeffco Stadium.

“She (Rainsberger) just said good job and I said good job getting the record,” Reed said of the conversation when the two hugged after Rainsberger set a new state meet record winning the Class 4A girls 1,600-meter state title with a time of 4:45.27.

  • Short stay at state baseball for...

DENVER — Having won nine-of-10 games entering the Class 5A baseball double-elimination state tournament, Dakota Ridge liked its chances for a long stay.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, losses to Cherokee Trail (May 20 at All-City Field) and Mullen (May 21 at Machebeuf High School) brought the season to an abrupt end for Dakota Ridge (15-8 record).

  • Rebels book trip to state soccer...

LAKEWOOD — The left foot of Columbine senior Tatum Barton got the Rebels one step closer to the Class 5A girls soccer state championship game.

Barton’s 28th goal this season was all the 5A Jeffco League champs needed offensively May 18 in the state quarterfinal showdown with No. 7 seed Rocky Mountain. The senior forward ripped a left-footed shot from atop the Lobos’ goalie box in the 49th minute that hit the inside of the right post and into the back of the net.
