    Paul Lowe is a youth pastor and one who devotes himself to helping kids learn how best to serve God. He’s also a football coach, but, unfortunately, Denver Christian didn’t have a team after it suspended its program prior to the 2014 season. 

    But when Front Range Christian unexpectedly had an opening, it was a perfect match for the two to come together.

    Little League Baseball draws the lion’s share of publicity, capped by its nationally televised World Series in Williamsport, Pa. But baseball purists might prefer tournaments under the auspice of the United States Specialty Sports Association, of which the Dakota Ridge Sports Association’s youth teams are a member.

    All-state girls soccer

    Columbine High School’s Tatum Barton and Brittany Wilson were first-team all-state selections in voting done by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    Barton, a senior forward, scored 13 goals this season, third-best on the team.

    Wilson, a senior goalkeeper, had a goals-against average of 0.6 in 19 games. She averaged about two and a half saves per outing.

    Columbine’s Kelcey Cavarra, a senior midfielder, was a second-team selection. She scored eight goals and added 12 assists.

    On Saturday, at least, it was the latter for about 90 volunteers who participated in a National Trails Day event at Jeffco Open Space’s Matthews/Winters Park.

    LAKEWOOD — It might not have surpassed the special memories on the football field at Jeffco Stadium, but Dakota Ridge senior Cale Ferrin found the right way to end his prep sports career.

    Ferrin, who placed third in the high jump at the 5A Jeffco League Championships the previous week, finished fourth at the state meet May 19.

    Columbine sophomore Tess Mitchell placed tied for 63rd at the Class 5A girls golf state tournament that wrapped up May 24 at CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora. Mitchell shot round of 88 and 98 to finish 42-over-par for the two-day tournament.
