  • Eagles’ defense swats GJ

Steal, steal and steal again. Dakota Ridge’s defense wreaked havoc on visiting Grand Junction on Tuesday night in the opening round of the 5A state girls’ basketball tournament.

Behind 13 points from freshman Emily Doolittle and 12 from sophomore Sydney Daniels, Dakota Ridge led from start to finish in rolling to a 54-38 victory over the Lady Tigers at Dakota Ridge High School. But it was the team’s defense, specifically a full-court pressing trap, that befuddled Grand Junction for much of the night.

  • Manzanares, Mullin were hoping...

DENVER — Earl C. Manzanares had the experience of being at the 5A state wrestling championships in 2016, but for Ted Mullin, this was his first trip to the Pepsi Center. As it would turn out, both Manzanares’ experience and Mullin’s inexperience at state showed at the 2017 event, but both were hoping for more.

  • Chargers perfect in Jeffco, again

On the one hand, as Chatfield senior Titus Reed put it, the Chargers’ 74-39 victory over Columbine on Friday night was a “good milestone,” and it was.

Chatfield not only completed its second straight 5A Jeffco League championship, but it also won its 30th straight conference game. The team celebrated by cutting down one of the nets at Chatfield Senior High afterwards.

Drama has rarely unfolded during Chatfield’s run to within one victory of a second straight unbeaten season in 5A Jeffco League boys basketball, and it was no different on Valentine’s Day after a 97-57 home rout of Dakota Ridge.

  • Jaguars’ Selin wins freestyle...

THORNTON — Abbey Selin, by her own admission, was pretty out of shape, and the D’Evelyn junior didn’t know what to expect coming into the 3A state swimming championships on Friday at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center.

“It’s been a rough year,” Selin said.

THORNTON — Peyton Wayment’s junior season in 2016 wasn’t a disappointment — fifth place in the 500-yard freestyle in the 5A state meet is nothing to hang your head over. But the Chatfield distance swimmer knew she could do better in 2017.

Determined to end her high school career with a bigger splash, Wayment vowed to leave no stone unturned.

  • Chargers fail to capitalize on ...

WESTMINSTER — Missed opportunities early proved costly for the Chatfield Chargers. A pair of power plays in the opening seven minutes went unanswered, while host Standley Lake made the most of its man-advantage, scoring a pair of power-play goals in a 5-2 victory Feb. 3 at the Promenade Ice Centre.

  • Chatfield edges Ralston Valley...

ARVADA — Many assume swimmers don’t sweat when they race. Then again, many people don’t understand the pressure that comes with having just one meet left with which to qualify for state competition.

Through sweat and sacrifice, the Chatfield Lady Chargers took first place at the 5A Jeffco League finals at Meyers Pool on Feb. 3-4 with 408.5 points, edging out rival Ralston Valley.
