  • Lady Eagles coming into their own

    Evolution is key to survival whether it be in the wild or in the pool. The Dakota Ridge Lady Eagles girls’ swim team has gone through an evolution.
    In years past, they were a team of strong, if not at times mismatched, swimmers who lacked depth and appeared to lack confidence. Dakota Ridge was a team that had a few swimmers go to state, mostly in relays, but that didn’t place as a team or individually. But that was the Lady Eagles of yesteryear.

    BOYS BASKETBALL
    Snow, Columbine off to 2-0 start in 5A Jeffco League
    LAKEWOOD     — Jon Snow scored 22 points to lead Columbine as the Rebels won for the sixth time in seven games 60-49 over host Lakewood on Jan. 5.
    Garrett Hyde added 11 points, while Brad Crowther scored 10 for the Rebels (7-2, 2-0 5A Jeffco League).
    The game was tied at 29 at halftime before Columbine pulled away with an 18-7 run in the third quarter.

  • Chatfield breaks out of winter...

    ARVADA — The way things started Jan. 3 between the Chatfield Chargers and host Pomona Panthers it had trap game written all over it. After all, the Chargers’ boys basketball team ranks among the 5A Jeffco League’s elite, having won five in a row, while the Panthers, a team struggling and on a four-game slide, were the polar opposite
    Yet, there was Pomona scrapping out 16 of the game’s first 21 points and threatening Chatfield’s spot, if only briefly, atop the league’s standings.

    Andy Lowry, Columbine High School’s football coach, if anything else is a modest person. He defers credit for his success to anybody and everybody else. The school’s administration staff, his assistant coaches, the Lord himself.

  • Emotions get the best of Lions

    EVERGREEN — Emotion on the court can be a double-edged sword — the catalyst to defeat a tough opponent or the key to a team’s undoing. For the Littleton Lions’ boys basketball team on Jan. 4, it was the key to their undoing.
    The Lions let their emotions get the better of them in the fourth quarter, giving up their third-period lead in allowing the Evergreen Cougars to score a 68-57 win.

  • Wages is Mines' power source

    GOLDEN — Trevor Wages is a home-grown kid. All 6-foot-9, 255 pounds of him. He’s one who likes to stay close to home. It is the best place he could be.
    But who is the Colorado School of Mines men’s basketball player?
    “Just a non-stop hustle, non-stop work (guy). I’m fierce, always competitive who doesn’t like to lose. I like to win. I’m a winner,” Wages said.

  • 2013: New Year's Resolutions

    The calendar has changed over. It’s a new year. It’s 2013. Each year, people make resolutions or predictions for what they want to do or what they expect to happen in the coming 12 months. The Columbine Courier sports staff spoke to a number of local athletes, coaches and athletic directors and asked them what they foresee happening this year.

    GIRLS BASKETBALL
    Griffiths leads Lady Falcons to fourth consecutive victory
    COLORADO SPRINGS — Front Range Christian broke open a tied ballgame in the second half, outscoring Colorado Springs Christian School 22-13 en route to a 39-30 victory on Dec. 15.
    Leigh Griffiths led the Lady Falcons with 14 points. Shelby Bloomquist added seven.
    Front Range Christian improved to 4-0 on the season.
