DENVER -- Christian Holmes, the Chatfield Chargers’ No. 1 singles player, is the 5A state boys tennis champion. It’s the first state tennis title at a singles position in school history.
Holmes started off slowly Saturday morning at the Gates Tennis Center, losing the first set 6-4 to Fairview’s Tom Melville. In the second set, after going down 3-2 early, something clicked for the Chatfield junior. He won the next four games to take the second set 6-3.
In the final set, it seemed as though Holmes couldn’t be stopped as he took the first four games quickly before Melville struck back to make it 4-1. But Holmes took the next two games and the title.
This is the first time that Jeffco has had a champion in the largest classification (5A) for No. 1 singles since 1996, and just the fifth title since state tennis began in 1927.
