Colorow Elementary School has organized a shoe drive to raise money to purchase new playground equipment.

Colorow students, their family members, and friends and other community members will donate new or lightly used shoes to the school. At the end of the shoe drive, the school will donate the collected shoes to an organization called Funds2Org, who compensates 40 cents per pound of shoes and sends the school a check. Funds2Org then works with micro-businesses across the world to provide shoes so entrepreneurs can create, maintain and grow small businesses in countries where economic opportunity and jobs are limited.

“We’re always looking for new and different ideas that would still bring us in some money without costing our families anything,” said PTA president Julie Taller, noting Colorow is a small school with a high percentage of students on free or reduced lunch.

“We raise money for our playground, and we have a chance to help families in developing nations …,” she added. “It’s a win-win for everyone.”

Colorow will continue the shoe drive through March 8, with a goal of collecting 2,500 pairs of shoes. Anyone is welcome to donate, not just those with a Colorow connection.

“The company suggests if you’re comfortable giving (the pair of shoes) to a friend, they can accept them,” Taller said. “Other than that, we’ll take them.”

Shoes are accepted during school hours, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is a laundry basket inside the front doors of the school where shoes can be placed. Colorow Elementary School is located at 6317 S. Estes St. in Littleton.
