Drawbacks of Prolonged Sitting Revealed

Various studies have been conducted and have found that prolonged sitting has many negative effects on our health. They have linked this to diabetes, heart disease and other types of cancer. While these studies are only short-term, they do suggest that this behavior should be reduced.

A recent study of more than 8,000 adults showed that long periods of sedentary behavior are associated with an increased risk of premature death. People who sit for four hours or more per day were nearly twice as likely to die from any cause than those who rarely sit. It’s also related to a number of mental health conditions.

Several studies have shown that prolonged sedentary behavior is associated with a higher risk of depression, anxiety and obesity. The American Medical Association has promoted policies to decrease this behavior in the workplace. In addition, the AHA has also recommended that individuals spend at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day.

The American Heart Association recently released a statement in the journal Circulation, stating that prolonged sedentary behavior may play a role in cardiovascular disease. In addition, it was discovered that a person who sat for a full day has a 147 percent higher risk of developing a heart attack.

The study also found that men who sat for more than six hours a day were more likely to develop coronary artery disease and heart failure than those who sat for less than four hours. Women who sat for 40 hours a week had a doubled risk of developing blood clots that moved to the lungs. They were also more likely to experience psychological distress than men. The study, which included data from participants in 54 countries, estimated that prolonged sitting is the second most important risk factor for mortality.

In addition, a lack of exercise is linked to poor mental health. Studies have also shown that a lack of fitness can increase the risk of certain cancers. In fact, a recent study of office workers in Australia discovered that a large percentage of workers suffered from symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders. The most common problems were reported in the shoulders, lower back and neck.

Researchers have also found that people who frequently sit for more than 90 minutes a day have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cancer and coronary artery disease. The effect of sitting on these conditions was also found to be independent of a person’s weight, BMI and other factors. The study found that sitting for longer periods was associated with unhealthy cholesterol levels.

It’s possible that a sedentary lifestyle leads to an increase in blood clots and inflammation, which may increase the risk of cancer. Some scientists believe that sitting causes insulin resistance, which is a precursor to diabetes. In addition, prolonged sitting has been linked to an increase in body fat around the waist.
