Inter-Canyon approves purchase of new truck

Board also agrees to extend contract with political consulting firm

The Inter-Canyon Fire board approved the purchase of a $276,000 tactical tender truck during its May 31 meeting.

“Within our district, we have only two small areas that have hydrants, and so that means that in the majority of our fires, we have to use water tenders to truck that water in,” said Dan Hatlestad, spokesman for the fire protection district.

Tenders typically carry 2,400 gallons of water, while the average home would take 30,000 gallons of water to put out when fully involved, Hatlestad said.

“It’s a lot of water that we’re moving,” he added.

While the district has three other tenders, the tactical tender is better suited for off-road environments.

The truck, built by Fort Collins-based SVI Trucks, will be paid for in total upon delivery, which is set for 365 days from board approval. It will begin service in the summer of 2019.

Once it arrives, the board will decide whether to sell one of its current water tender trucks or to use all four.

Turn Corps

Additionally, the board voted to extend its contract with Turn Corps, a public affairs and political strategy firm out of Denver.

The contract will continue for two months with Inter-Canyon paying the firm $1,500 per month.

Inter-Canyon is considering asking for a mill-levy increase in the November election. The political consulting firm has assisted the district in preparing by strategizing, collecting information from its residents and conducting a district-wide survey.

“Getting a comprehensive message out is sometimes difficult,” said Chief Skip Shirlaw, noting Turn Corps has been vital in helping the district understand its issues and create a comprehensive message.

The board agreed with Shirlaw. Extending the contract “seems to be kind of a no brainer” for treasurer Karl Firor.
