An inmate inadvertently released from the Jeffco jail on Tuesday is back behind bars.

Damon Elliot Slayton, 41, was taken into custody Thursday morning by a Jeffco deputy in downtown Denver near Broadway and Larimer Street.

Jeffco sheriff’s spokeswoman Jacki Kelley said the Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies had been searching the downtown area based on tips from Slayton’s family and other friends.

Slayton surrendered without incident, Kelley said.

Slayton was being detained at the jail for a parole violation when "human error" led to his release Tuesday morning. Original charges against Slayton included theft, robbery and burglary.

The file on Slayton had two different dates of release, Kelley said, and the staff member reading the files didn’t follow the proper protocol.

“There are processes in place to verify conflicting information, and it was not verified,” Kelley said.

The Sheriff’s Office has instituted new procedures to verify such information, including having more staffers verify it, Kelley said.

Kelley said Slayton had been due to be released in the next few months. She said the sheriff's internal affairs unit is still investigating his inadvertent release.
