A Golden woman has died after losing control of her motorcycle while merging onto westbound C-470 on Saturday afternoon.

Around 4 p.m., Susan Hartley, 53, came around the loop from northbound U.S. 285, hit gravel on the left side of the ramp and lost control, according to Steve Davis, spokesman with the Lakewood Police Department.

“She crossed a couple of lanes and hit a Honda Pilot that was already heading westbound,” Davis said.

Hartley was ejected from the motorcycle and hit a guardrail. She was pronounced dead on scene and transported to the Jeffco Coroner’s Office.

The accident shut down C-470 in both directions at Quincy Avenue. While eastbound C-470 reopened at 5 p.m. that day, westbound C-470 remained closed and a detour was instituted. Davis said a portion of the road was closed for “quite some time,” but he was unsure at what time all lanes reopened.

Colorado State Patrol and the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office assisted the Lakewood Police Department with the crash.

An off-duty CSP trooper happened to be right behind the accident and stopped to help out.

“(He) didn’t indicate that he witnessed it, but he came on scene very shortly after it happened,” Davis said. “He was quite helpful.”

The female driver of the Honda Pilot was shaken up by the accident but was otherwise physically fine.
