New senior living facility offers luxury to residents

There is a new senior living facility in town, but you’d probably have to read the sign to recognize it as such.

Balfour at Littleton, which offers assisted living and memory care options, is set to open by December in its location on West Coal Mine Avenue. When it does, it will be the fourth Balfour Senior Living facility. The company opened in 1997 and is based in Colorado. Each Balfour location is specifically designed for the community and the people that live there. In South Jeffco, the 75,000 square foot building has a barn-style exterior as a tribute to Littleton’s equestrian history.

That’s part of Balfour’s philosophy, and it is one of co-founder Susan Juroe’s favorite parts of the job. Juroe fell in love with architecture and design while living in Washington, D.C. In keeping with the equestrian theme, the inside of Balfour at Littleton is decorated with horse reins, saddles and other found objects and art from polo fields and race tracks. There are even a few items from Juroe’s personal collection.

“We truly do care about having joy and happiness and making people excited to be where they’re living and wake up every day and be happy,” she said, adding that she hopes residents will feel a sense of discovery as they walk through the facility.

Furthermore, when residents officially move in, they will have the opportunity to work with the community’s life enrichment director to schedule events and programs.

“We make it individual to our population so our residents really get to pick and choose what they want to do,” said executive director Zach Strunk.

“If they all decide they want to go to Black Hawk, then we’re going to set up a transport to Black Hawk,” Strunk added. “We really want this to be their home, and we just work in the environment for them.”

The community is all-encompassing and includes nursing staff, security, food, a spa and salon, a movie theater, an activities room, a gym for physical therapy and more. It’s all about making life easier for those living there, and any amenity that is not offered will be brought in as needed.

All in all, Balfour at Littleton holds 56 assisted living units and 30 memory care units.

For Strunk, Balfour’s memory-care option is one of the most gratifying parts. His grandmother had Alzheimer’s and was in and out of communities for about 10 years. Each stage of the disease is different, but each is hard, Strunk noted.

“So we really try to work with families on that, you know, helping them through the process, being the support system for them,” he said. “Like I said, you’re taking of everyone. We’re not here to just take care of the resident. We want to make sure communication’s open, and we’re all doing it together.”

The facility is located at 8160 W. Coal Mine Ave. For more information, visit the website at www.balfourcare.com/locations/littleton, stop in or call 720-470-4344.
