District also looking to hire a new chief

Three of the seven West Metro Fire Rescue board of director seats are up for election in May, and as of last week the district had received only a handful of self-nominations.

Board president and District 4 director Pam Feely is running again for her seat, though incumbent Ted Waller is ineligible to run, as he no longer resides in District 7 following a redrawing of district boundaries that pushed Waller out by several blocks.

The deadline for submitting self-nomination forms for the May 8 election is March 2 at 4 p.m., and forms must be submitted to the designated election official at 3535 S. Kipling St. in Lakewood. Residents must live in Districts 4, 6 or 7 for the at-large election. Districts 6 and 7 span a portion of South Jeffco, while District 4 is north of U.S. 285.

The district is also in the process of hiring a new fire chief. West Metro has received at least eight applications for the high-ranking position, including one from interim Fire Chief Don Lombardi.

West Metro plans to hold candidate interviews on March 20 and make a selection by April 3. A new chief is expected to begin the job on May 1.

Former chief Douglas McBee resigned last year. The board prolonged its search for a replacement, Feely said, to determine what qualities the district should seek in candidates.

“We have to go through a process to determine what we want in a chief, what are the qualifications,” Feely said, adding that the search is not limited to local candidates, though it was not advertised nationally. “We decided to post it on our website. … It’s not really a national search, but if there is someone interested from outside the district, they are free to apply.”

A salary range for the new chief will be negotiated, Feely said. McBee earned $141,000 annually at the time of his retirement.

The West Metro Fire board is next scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. March 7 in the administration building at 433 S. Allison Parkway in Lakewood.
