A new 40,000-square-foot South Jeffco emporium slinging everything from skateboards and paintball guns to secondhand DVDs and video games is slated to open Aug. 1.

Tradesmart, a new concept store from the Amarillo, Texas-based Hastings Entertainment company, is banking on the idea that customers remain hungry for hard copies of media in an increasingly digitized world.

“For us, our market is still doing great,” said Hastings regional manager Ben Mabry, noting that demand for vinyl records — another medium the store will offer — is booming. “We buy product from the customers. We sell it back at a great value.”

Depending on the title, used CDs and DVDs are sold for a few dollars or less. Though the majority of the store’s merchandise, including books, will be pre-owned, initial offerings in the athletic department will be new.

In the future, it might not be a stretch for customers to turn in used skateboard decks for credit toward video games, Mabry said.

“That’s always a possibility at this point,” he said.

The store, located at 8500 W. Crestline Ave., will initially employee a staff of about 90, Mabry said, adding that the business is still filling a few positions. Hastings operates four stores in Colorado.
