Two candidates vying for West Metro’s District 3 board seat

Although four seats are up for election on the West Metro Fire Rescue Board of Directors, just one is contested.

Former legislator Mike Feeley is running against Joe Margotte for the open District 3 position.

District 3 primarily covers Lakewood and Morrison and is bounded by Alameda Avenue on the north and Kipling Parkway on the east. This district extends a bit west of C-470 and a bit south of U.S. 285.

All West Metro residents can vote in the May 8 election. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at West Metro’s Station 17 and 15, as well as the district’s training center and administrative offices.

District 3

When contacted about an interview for this article, Margotte said he had “no comment.”

Feeley, a 34-year resident of West Metro Fire Protection District, once served as a Democratic state senator representing Lakewood. He is married to Lesley Dahlkemper, a candidate for the Jeffco Board of County Commissioners, and is an attorney.

“We really are very fortunate to have such a high quality fire and rescue department,” Feeley said. “I think that’s indicative in part by the stewardship of the board. It’s largely the result of the incredibly talented firefighters who work in the district.”

In 1993, Feeley served on the board of the Lakewood Fire Protection District and was involved in the merger that created West Metro in 1995. If elected, Feeley said he plans to continue working for the taxpayers and considers funding to be one of the primary challenges facing the district.

The Gallagher Amendment, which limits growth in residential property tax rates, coupled with the population and residential property value explosion hampers West Metro’s ability to meet the growing demand for services, according to Feeley.

Other districts

Incumbents Marta Murray, Cassie Tanner and Jerry Cassel will retain their positions on the board as they are running unopposed.

Cassel, a lifelong Wheat Ridge resident, is the newest member of the board and will serve a four-year term. He was appointed in late 2017 to fill the District 2 position after board member Kent Johnson

moved to Texas.

Tanner, who will serve a four-year term, previously served as treasurer, while Murray, serving a two-year term, was vice president.
