  • Trial underway for South Jeffco murder suspect

    The prosecutor in the Jordan Lemarinel murder trial on Friday told the jury that video surveillance showed the defendant attempting to put the victim’s body into a vehicle.

    Lemarinel’s defense attorney, however, said in opening statements that his client acted in self-defense when he shot Stewart.

    The trial of Lemarinel, one of two suspects in the May 2017 murder of a Littleton man, will continue Monday at the Jefferson County courthouse with witnesses from the prosecution. It is scheduled to go through March 9.

  • Jeffco inmate dies after being found non-responsive

    The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of an inmate, who was found non-responsive in her cell early Thursday morning.
    Jennifer Marie Brooks, the 46-year-old Bailey resident who reportedly led Jeffco Sheriff's deputies on a chase that shut down U.S. 285 for about an hour last July, was found non-responsive with a trash bag over her head in her cell at the Jefferson County Detention Facility.

    Art covers her body and the walls of her tattoo shop. It ordains the outside of the hearse she drives.

    As a child born into a family of artists, Kyle, 60, had a natural artistic ability. She was constantly drawing.

    Nicole Wellensiek grew up with an affinity for math and science.

    She considered a few routes in the health care industry, but, ultimately, optometry won out. Now, Wellensiek, 45, of Evergreen is one of two optometrists at Evergreen Vision Clinic.

    That is a huge part of why she loves her job as a deputy in the Jefferson County Jail. The jail averages about 1,200 inmates on a daily basis and is the central detention facility for law enforcement agencies across Jefferson County.
