While the madness of Black Friday will play out at big-box retailers this week, small businesses in South Jeffco want residents to remember that bigger isn’t necessarily better when it comes to holiday shopping.

Saturday is national Small Business Saturday, an event started in 2010 by American Express to give local businesses their own Black Friday sales day. The event calls on shoppers across the country to forgo the big retail chains and spend their money at locally owned and operated stores.

2012-13 recap: Chatfield reached the 5A state tournament after ending the regular season on a six-game winning streak. Chatfield’s defensive pressure helped its offense get in sync late in the season.

  • Five story lines for the upcoming girls basketball season

The following are just five story lines to follow as the high school girls basketball season gets ready to commence:

  • November: a time to remember and a time to act

    By Ellen Golombek

Before he served in Congress and before he went to the White House, Lt. John F. Kennedy commanded torpedo boats in the South Pacific during World War II. His distinguished military career resulted in being awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal and the Purple Heart. He was proud of his service and once said, “I can imagine no more rewarding a career.”

  • Plea deal makes sense for Holmes

It’s time to make a deal with James Holmes.

As we approach the year and a half anniversary of the tragedy of the Aurora theater shootings and as the pretrial hearings continue (and continue and continue!), it looks less and less likely that Holmes will ever be executed. It would be in the public interest to get some kind of plea in place that assures Holmes will spend the rest of his life in custody, to achieve final resolution and to put this ordeal to bed once and for all.
