  • Running series hopes to inspire kids to ‘get up and go’

    As runners and parents, Brooke and Robert Selb strive to promote exercise and activity for kids in South Jeffco.

    Because of this, the couple chose to coordinate a Healthy Kids Running Series event in Littleton. The national series was created by Jeff Long, founder and president of Pattison Sports Group, to provide kids with a positive, educational and fun experience in the world of running.

  • Annual Courage Walk an opportunity for crime victims to join together

    Despite moving out of state, Tiffany Segura and her family return to Colorado every year for the Jefferson County Courage Walk.

    For Segura, the annual walk is a means of healing and way to remember her 2-year-old son, Donny Ro’Mello Romero, who was murdered in Lakewood in 2015. Last Saturday, she and a large group of family and friends made the short trek around the Jefferson County courthouse to the on-site courage garden, carrying flowers and a large banner honoring Donny.

  • Gonzales found guilty of child abuse after injuring girlfriend’s daughter

    A Jefferson County jury, after three hours of deliberation, found 22-year-old Joshua Gonzales guilty on a felony charge of child abuse with serious bodily injury after seriously injuring the 2-year-old daughter of his former girlfriend.

    The trial began April 9 and lasted four days. Gonzales is facing anywhere from 10 to 32 years in prison and will be sentenced May 31.

  • One suspect charged in murder of D’Evelyn graduate

    Charges have been filed against one of three suspects in the April 5 murder of 27-year-old Andrew Jenicek.

    Devon Drizzt Howard, 20, is charged with a number of felonies, including first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, criminal attempt to commit aggravated robbery and more. Howard was arrested April 10 in a joint effort by the Edgewater Police Department, Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the Colorado U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force.

  • Local nonprofit offers a night off for parents of kids with special needs

    Through her own family’s journey, Kristin Steadman recognized the need for respite care in South Jefferson County.

    In an effort to combat this, she created Night Lights, a respite care organization for children with special needs and their siblings housed in Waterstone Community Church. Seven years later, the nonprofit organization regularly meets capacity and has expanded to Arvada and Parker with plans for continued growth.

    LITTLETON — A walk-off victory is even sweeter when it comes against your biggest rival.

    “It feels great,” Chatfield senior Kasey Koppelmaa said after the Chargers’ 6-5 victory over their chief baseball rival on Saturday. “Columbine is always a good team. We’ve always had a really good game against them. It’s just unbelievable that we were able to get a great team victory today and climb through the adversity.”

  • Gold medalist Nicole Hensley returns to the Edge

    LITTLETON — In her return home from her first Olympic hockey experience, Nicole Hensley visited with local youth hockey players and their families at Edge Ice Arena on Sunday afternoon.

    And that big gold medal was hanging around her neck the whole time.
