  • Jeffco Open Space seeks clear...

    Jeffco Open Space wants its new master plan to do more than just collect dust.

    The plan, which gets an overhaul every five years, will include a set of benchmarks to help the Open Space Division see if it’s meeting stated goals. Previous master plans have lacked goals and objectives that could be measured, said Jeffco Parks and Open Space Director Tom Hoby.

    2012 record: 10-15 overall, 4-4 league
    2012 recap: The senior-laden Lady Rebels went 0-2 in the Region 8 tournament, losing to Highlands Ranch and Greeley West. Senior middle blocker Lauren Cole earned first-team All-Jeffco and was second in blocks and third in kills. Senior Verenice Chaparro also was first-team all-league.

  • Cutthroats tryout lets hopefuls...

    One played just a season of high school hockey and seven more in adult leagues. Another was born without a left hand. Forty-two players in all donned their hockey gear at The Edge Ice Arena hoping to catch the attention of head coach Derek Anderson and the Denver Cutthroats’ minor league hockey staff.
    For many, this could be their only shot. A three-day open tryout, limited to a select number of players per position, was held Aug. 23-25. As Anderson said, it’s about the spirit of the game, about giving guys an opportunity.

    EVERGREEN — Both Dakota Ridge and Evergreen have new coaches in 2013. That, however, is where the similarities ended, at least on Aug. 22.
    One team — Evergreen — was coming off a commanding victory over Thornton in its opener. The other — Dakota Ridge — just squeezed out a win over Legend. But, in this one, it was Dakota Ridge from the start.

    2012 record: 12-4-1, second round of the 5A state tournament
    2012 recap: Thirteen seniors led Chatfield to a second-place league finish and the second round of the state playoffs. The Chargers season was ended by Boulder, the eventual 5A state champions. Chatfield tied Boulder at 2-all with 90 seconds left in regulation only to concede the game-winning goal with 40 seconds left.

    2012 recap: Chatfield finished second in the 5A Jeffco League and at regionals, while qualifying six of seven spots for the state tournament. The Chargers received the boys tennis sportsmanship award for the state of Colorado in 2012.

    LAKEWOOD — You’d be hard-pressed to find a better all-around high school athlete in Colorado than Michael Tait. The Columbine junior likely will earn four letters this school year and start at arguably three of the most important positions in team sports — quarterback (football), point guard (basketball) and center field (baseball).
